In this article, we highlight the collective and synergistic efforts of Baylor students and faculty pursuing research and scholarship of the highest intellectual merit. These students were winners of national grants and scholarships, selected by a panel of experts in their respective fields. Student awards are a point of pride for Baylor faculty mentors and a well-deserved recognition of the excellent research conducted by Baylor graduate students.
Laura Kusumo (B.S.in Neuroscience 2023) is a doctoral student in Psychology (behavioral neuroscience) at Baylor mentored by Dr. Elizabeth Vichaya. Her dissertation research is investigating the anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory effects of Resveratrol—a natural antioxidant found in fruits—in a mouse model of hyperglycemia. Laura was awarded the 2024 National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (NSF GRFP), which provides funding for three years of graduate study.
Stacy Edington is a doctoral student in Biology, studying human-pathogen coevolution and using genomics to measure the effects of transition from foraging to agricultural lifestyle on human immune system gene expression. Stacy received the 2024 National Science Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Research Grant.
Fulbright Scholars. Three Baylor graduate students have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright scholarship in the 2024-25 program year to study, teach, or conduct research abroad.
Annie Himler Cheng - Doctoral candidate in History - is the recipient of the Fulbright Study/Research Award to Cambodia. Annie’s research will create a publicly accessible digital learning tool to visualize transpacific movements of Cambodian genocide survivors and learn about their lived experiences using audio and visual material. Annie is also the recipient of Baylor’s 2024 Fundamentals of Data Research Fellowship.
Katrina Gallegos - MA in Museum Studies - Katrina is the recipient of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Portugal. She will teach English at the Universidad de Madeira in the Department of Arts and Humanities. She is an alumna of Baylor's McNair Scholars program. Katrina also received the Calvin Smith Award from Baylor's Department of Museum Studies and recently completed a fellowship with the Smithsonian Institute.
Emily Wicker - MA in Spanish - is the recipient of the Fulbright English Teaching Assistantship to Colombia, where she will teach English and U.S. culture.
